Starting location is Pilzone. View it here.
This point-to-point hike follows a significant section of the Antica Via Valeriana, a historical Roman transit route connecting the Sebino area to Val Camonica. The trail departs from the lakeside village of Pilzone d'Iseo and maintains an elevated position along the mountainside, traversing a mix of ancient paved Roman segments, olive groves, and Mediterranean scrub.
The route is technically accessible and characterized by moderate gradients, making it suitable for a wide range of fitness levels. Key features include the passage through several rural hamlets and stone-built villages, offering constant views of Monte Isola and the central lake basin. The trek concludes in Sale Marasino with a structured lunch break featuring traditional regional cuisine—such as casoncelli, polenta taragna, and local lake fish—paired with Franciacorta wines. This itinerary emphasizes the historical land-use patterns of the region, from Roman engineering to traditional terraced agriculture.
