Hiking Gear

When preparing for a hike, selecting the appropriate gear is crucial for ensuring both safety and enjoyment. This page outlines the essential items that every hiker should consider bringing along on their journey.

Hiking boots or trail runners are highly recommended (or mandatory on some of our trips) for their ability to provide adequate support and traction on varied terrains. Wearing high-quality, well-fitted shoes can significantly reduce the risk of slips, falls, and blisters.

In addition to footwear, hydration is a critical component of any hiking trip. Carrying a backpack equipped with sufficient water is essential. A hydration pack or water bottles should be easily accessible within the backpack to encourage regular hydration.

Proper clothing is crucial for a comfortable and safe hiking experience. A layering system is key, allowing you to adapt to fluctuating weather. Your base layer should focus on wicking moisture away from your skin, keeping you dry. Insulating layers provide warmth, while a waterproof and windproof outer shell protects you from the elements. Avoid cotton at all costs; it soaks up sweat and becomes heavy, damp, and chilling, potentially leading to chafing, blisters, and even hypothermia in cold weather. Instead, opt for synthetics like polyester or nylon, or natural merino wool. These materials excel at moisture-wicking, dry quickly, and retain their insulating properties even when wet, ensuring you stay comfortable, dry, and safe on the trail.

Lastly, consider packing snacks that are high in energy and easy to carry. Foods such as nuts, energy bars, and dried fruits are excellent choices, as they provide necessary fuel during the hike.
