Hiking Lake Iseo
Monte Isola, Realm of Forgotten Magic
Monte Isola, Realm of Forgotten Magic
Starting location is Sulzano. View it here.
This route explores Monte Isola, the largest lake island in Central and Southern Europe. The itinerary begins with a logistics-based ferry transit from Sulzano to the village of Peschiera Maraglio. As a car-free zone, the island offers a high-tranquility environment for technical hiking.
The trek involves a steady ascent from the lakeside harbor toward the island’s summit. The trail architecture is mixed, consisting of narrow urban alleys, traditional forest paths, and historical mule tracks paved in local stone. The primary objective is the Sanctuary of Madonna della Ceriola, situated at the island's highest topographical point. This vantage point provides a 360-degree technical overlook of the entire Lake Iseo basin and the surrounding Prealpine ridges.
The descent follows a secondary trail to create a circular loop, returning to Peschiera Maraglio. The experience concludes with an optional lunch break focused on the island's unique culinary heritage, featuring traditional sun-dried lake fish and local olive oil.
